How does one return to work after being attacked by wild beasts, watching the girlfriend be torn to shreds, unable to keep it from happening? The only answer to a question like this is, not at all. So, Jared takes a couple of sick days and hides out at his parents. He just doesn't want to stay in the flat with all the reminders of her. There are Genevieve's clothes in the dresser and the closet, her herbal teas and the fuity shampoo in the shower. All the stillettos and other high-heeled shoes that are taking up all of their wardrobe space.

After a week hiding out he has to return to his job and to his own apartment. Megan insists on her coming with him, refusing to let him stay on his own. That's why he carts two suitcases and a duffle bag of clothes and necessary accessories from his parents house to the apartment. His little sister is sitting next to him, babbling on about the latest gossip at school, planning their evening, meal and movie du jour.

"Are you even listening to anything I say Jared?" The reprimend has him wince guiltily. If he is completely honest he has to admit that he tuned Megan out right after they started driving. It's not like he wants to be rude, just that he has heard more than enough highschool drama during the last week. The dating game of teenage kids isn't really what he's interested on the best of days and the last seven days have been anything but.

"Sorry." Jared sends her an appologetic smiles and winks at her. "I promise to pay more attention to the love life of your class mates."

At this she just rolls her eyes. "Don't get overly excited." But Megan is not cross with him for his lack of interest. They both know that the only reason why she bores him with such inane gossip is that she wants to distract from what is to come.

Jared gives her another grin. His little sister is the best there is. There's no way anyone is better than Megan. "I'll do my best."

The rest of the drive they listen to the radio, Megan occassionally humming along with a refrain or tapping the beat on her thigh. Since traffic is not even worth mentioning they reach the apartment complex without any delay. Jared parks the car in the usual spot and then they lugg Megan's things to the elevator. Once inside and riding up to the tenth floor, the silence becomes thick, almost tangible. It's like a third person in the enclosed space.

"I'm going to stay with you for a minimum of two weeks." The determination in Megan's voice makes him want to smile at her, but the looming confrontation with the empty rooms he used to share with Genevieve makes it impossible to do so. So he does the only thing he can right now, which is nod tiredly.

The elevator doors ding and open. Taking a deep breath, Jared takes the suitcases and gets off. His sister trailing behind him with her hand bag and the duffel, he forces himself to stride down the corridor to his door. Well,. it's not so much a striding as a shuffling. It's amazing how small the steps are he's taking, considering his heigh and the length of saif legs.

But, no matter how slow they walk, in the end they reach the right door. There's the flowery stickers that Genevieve arranged around the peep hole. In the artificial light they look not that bright, mor like dead or washed out.

Jared rumages through his pockets for the key. His fingers close around the metall and he takes them out. There is a slight tremble in his hand as he slides the key into the lock and turns it. Two more security locks and then he opens the door.

Everything is dark inside: But worse than the lack of illumination is the absence of sound. Jared just wants to turn around and drive back to his parents but taking a deep breath he reaches out and switches the light on. Picking the luggage up he steps inside and faces the remnants of his life with the person he had loved.
