He crouches low behind the brown things that are towering high next to a smelly metal block. Everything is so different here. There are the noisy cars, and everything smells really bad. It's a stink of dirt, rot and pollution. It tickles in his nose and he has to fight real hard to keep from sneezing. His ears hurt, he feels sick from the smell, there's dirt being smudged on his coat from running around and hiding in the dark streets. Food tastes unappetizing as well.

There is what he came looking for. A tall human comes into view. He smells of sweat and exhaustion. No better smell exists than this one. Ducking lower he watches the man looking around. When the hazel eyes meet his own everything seems to stop. His heart beats faster and he forces himself to stay still, not to run over there and rub his own scent all over the other. It's his mate. He's finally found him again.

After defending him in the woods from the pack, he had run the whole night. Everything had been so confusing. True, he knew that there were others out there who looked like humans but could turn into wolves as well, but never had he imagined to meet such a one. Even less that it would be his mate.

In the evening he had tracked the smell back to a house swarming with humans. He had hidden well, watching them running around and making a lot of noise. There had been no sign of his mate. The smell that had led him here was still present but it was already getting weaker. The one he had been looking for was not among the humans that were there.

Coming to realize he had panicked for a second, but then he had decided to get closer and try to find out where his mate had disappeared to. He managed to crawl underneath the wooden construction in the back of the house. There were human moving around above him and he concentrated hard to hear what they were saying. The human language is an ugly croaking and whining that is sometimes difficult to understand as a wolf. It's one of two times that he's changed into a human.

His hearing was worse than in his wolf form. But he stayed there, trembling from the aftermath of the change and doing his best to follow the conversation. There were two men and a woman, the female's voice was thick and breaks from time to time. There was the smell of salt in the air.

It was almost impossible to follow what they are saying. Most of all because he didn't know all the names they were referring to, but after some time he got that Jared is the one he was looking for and that he had returned to the city. Driven home to his family.

When the conversation was over and the humans returned back into the building, he left his hideout and returned to his previous lookout behind the trees and bushes. He stayed and watched for a long time, and when the woman and one of the males left the house and walked over to one of the cars he crept closer, taking a look at the writing on the back of the car. He knew that it tells him where they are from. Hopefully it's the same city as his mate lives in.

After the car had disappeared from his sight he headed out, through the woods along the road and to the village. Once he had reached the border to the houses and lit streets, he slinked around backyards until he arrived at Jeff's house. There were no lights on and he settled down in the bushes, waiting for him to come back.

Jeff is different than the other wolves. Even though he was born to the pack, he liked being a human so much, he decided to stay in this form. Ever since he's the one everyone goes to if they need to interact with the human world. He knows everything there is to know about them.

So far he's met Jeff only when he visited the pack as a wolf. Just like everyone else he had changed into a human when he was younger and the Time had come but he he never done so ever since. Human speech had to learn at his first change but he knows next to nothing about the world the two legged beings live in.

It's late at night that Jeff came home. The other wolf stopped in his tracks, his eyes locking onto the bushes he's hiding in. Slowly he crawled out and slinked over to Jeff. The other smelled of anger and it unsettled him, not knowing if the emotion is directed at him or something else.

"Change." There was a sharp edge to the word and he felt compelled to obey without hesitation. Concentrating hard he forced his body into human shape. Once he' was done he just stood there trembling with exertion and feeling rather insecure in this strange body. "D'you know human speech?"

At this he nodded and cleared his throat. "Yes."

It felt strange to talk in this form.

"Come inside." He followed with his head turning left and right, taking everything in through his human eyes, overwhelmed by the richness of color. His seeing was worse but everything had such a lushness and depth that had been lacking before.

The inside of the house was even darker than the night outside and everything smelled trapped. Like the air was not able to circulate the way it was supposed to. Suddenly bright light snapped on and he had to close his eyes against the pain.

"What the hell were the lot of you thinking? Killing seven humans like that?" The smell of anger increased and it was disconcerting to hear what had happened on that night. The smell of his mate had been enough to have him ignore anything else around him. His only objective had been to protect his mate, even at the cost of the life of one of his pack.

When Jeff got no reply to his questions he seemed to force himself to calm down. He looked at his opposite real hard. "Have you ever been living or interacting with humans?"

He shook his head. The rudimentary rules and formalities of human interactions he knows but if he was to survive as a human on his own, there is a lot he would have to learn before that.

"What's your name?" At that question he stared at Jeff without understanding. "If you are human you need a name. So, what is it?"

In the back of his mind something tingled and he opened his mouth to say: "Jensen."
