The title of the story was taken from the Shadows & Nightmares compilation by Two Steps From Hell.
Author’s Note: This storyline stems from my wish to write some kind of horror/thriller plot. Listening to Two Steps From Hell’s Horror and Thriller albums didn’t help any.

With a frown on his face he takes a sip from the coffee. The hot beverage is not only too hot for drinking but it's much too bitter for Jared's taste. The new shop he's getting his coffee from now is a little out of his way and the coffee is by far not up to the standard he's used to drinking. With every sip he takes, Jared gets more enraged about the person at fault for his current predicament. If it wasn't for the stupid idiot working at the coffee shop he used to got to, Jared would still be able to get his favourite tall mocha every morning.

His dark thoughts end abruptly when a car horn honks at him. The sudden noise has him drop the Styrofoam cup, splashing his slacks with dark brown liquid and ruining his outfit for the board meeting today. He ignores the shouted curses of the car driver and quickly darts across the street, almost sprinting for he taxi cab idling on the curb. Darting past a business man making for the same cab, he climbs into the car saying his address as he pulls the door closed. The driver doesn't even turn to look at him as he pulls out and joins the traffic.

Cursing under his breath he closes his eyes and forces himself to calm down. Somewhat at least. These days the stress level keeps increasing instead of declining and with his private life suffering as well, there is never a time when he can relax and let go of some of the steam that is building up during the day. Not only the fucked up stalker situation is getting to him, but there are still nights when he suffers from nightmares about what happened with Genevieve. Additionally to that there is the first change for Megan getting closer and closer. Sometimes when his little sister is really excited or happy or angry, her eyes get this shine, as if her wolf is looking out through them, getting an impression of what is going on all around her.

The taxi pulls up to the curb in front of his apartment building. "Wait here, I'll be back in a minute."

Without waiting for the reply, most likely the driver didn't give any, he darts inside the building and impatiently waits for the elevator to arrive. Once he's inside his home, Jared changes in record time. The shirt and the tie are still good but the suit has to go. With a speed that is almost inhuman he tosses aside the dirty clothes, tugging on a clear suit and then he breezes through the apartment, barely remembering to grab his briefcase, and jogs back to the elevator. The taxi is still idling when he sprints out of the front door. Jared gets in and gives the driver the address of his work.

The drive is fortunately short and Jared stuffs the money for the ride into the driver's hand while hurrying to the entrance of the office building. Once inside he stops in his tracks, makes sure all his clothes are in order and then he calmly walks to the elevators. It doesn't do for him to arrive at his office all out of breath and looking rumpled. He's supposed to set an example for his people after all.

With a ding the elevator door opens and Jared is greeted with the chatter and noise that is their office. He nods and smiles, says his good morning to everyone and heads for his private office. Alona is on the phone and writing down dates on her calendar. She barely reacts to him passing her by, just flicks her eyes up to his face and gives a quick nod. Jared nods back and heads for his desk, dropping his briefcase on top of it. He hangs up his coat and then sits down in the heavily padded office chair behind his desk.

Taking a deep breath he opens the case and takes the documents out he prepared for the board meeting. There's even some more time for him to get prepared.
