Two Steps From Hell’s Horror and Thriller albums didn’t help any.
Masterpost01.Jared runs faster. His lungs are burning from exhaustion. Once more he trips over some unseen obstacle, most likely a root or a small boulder. As his knees hit the ground, pain shooting through him, he’s sure he can hear movement behind him. It’s closer than it was before, and the distance is getting smaller still. With a pained grunt he pushes up and starts running again.
The night is dark, almost pitch black, the clouds holding back star and moon light, making it nigh impossible to make out anything. There are black shapes of trees in the black-blue-grey night air. They are hard to make out since everything has approximately the same colour. The only splash of light are the eyes of animals reflecting whatever sliver of residual light hits them.
Another root and Jared goes down again. He can’t hold back the pained groan that makes it past his lips. His knees and hands are bruised, his face and arms are scratched from bark, rocks and twigs, his lungs are burning and even though he’s pumped full of adrenalin, he’s slowly but steadily losing energy. Running for almost an hour will do that to you.
But there’s no sign of anybody friendly out there. The only thing that he can make out are trees, wildlife and darkness. And there’s his pursuer of course, who’s been hunting him ever since he escaped the attack on their camp. The sound of running behind him is what keeps him going on even though he feels like breaking down and stop moving all together.
He tries to get up but instead of up righting himself, he just stumbles forward and falls back to his knees. Jared lacks the energy needed to continue his flight. It feels like lead being attached to all of his limbs. Even breathing seems like a bother right now.
There is the rustling of leaves and growling not even ten steps behind him and Jared knows that it’s over. He can’t escape this time. His hands search for a weapon, a means of defence, of some kind. The only thing that he finds is an old branch, the very thing he stumbled over in the first place. He grabs the wood and holds on to it, brandishing it in front of his chest and face to fight off his pursuer.
More rustling, this time to his right and Jared is sure he can make out the white yellow glow of eyes that are focused on him. There’s almost no time to register any of this, before the attack starts.
