Author’s Note: This storyline stems from my wish to write some kind of horror/thriller plot. Listening to
Two Steps From Hell’s Horror and Thriller albums didn’t help any.
Masterpost20.The next day, after a night filled with nightmares, finds Jared at a gun store perusing the rows of mounted rifles and the showcases of handfire weapons. Truth be told Jared doesn't know a lot about weapons but he does know how to shoot and he'll be damned if he's going to run into the wolf that has hunted him down without any means of defense again. How the wolf managed to to that in the first place is a mystery to him. Even though lupines have a keen sense of smell, the feat of tracking Jared from the woods hundreds of miles away to town and to the park where he goes for a jog, is incredible. This means that Jared has to be even more careful because it poses the question what else this wolf is able of.
That's the reason why he finds himself in the store looking for a weapon to defend himself with. The guy behind the counter looks younger than Jared and he's smiling at him brightly. Somehow this is more disturbing than a slimy looking guy with a beer gut in hunting clothes would be.
"Can I help you?" The voice suits the cheerful disposition as if guns and rifles are a cause for celebrations.
"I'm looking for a rifle or gun for hunting." It's maybe not really clever to not have researched this at all but Jared really doesn't like guns all that much and he thought he would be able to rely on the expertise of the sales person at the store. The smiling youngster doesn't fill him with a lot of confidence.
"Okay, what are planning to hunt?" He turns around and takes down a couple of hunting rifles and puts them down on the counter. "Are you planning on shootig racoons, rabbits, pheasants or are you interested in big game?"
"Uh, wolves. I'm going on a wolf hunt." The rifles on the counter look big and dangerous but at his comment the guy starts mounting them back on the wall.
"Well, with wolves you can't use rimfire rifles, it's outlawed. They are big game." Jared just nods and watches and listens. "Varmint rifles are a better choice, like the 22/250, the 220 Swift, or the .243. You can use a deer or an elk rifle as well."
Jared peruses the weapons that are laid out in front of him. They look like from a TV Show or a movie, like a sniper should use them. He runs his fingers of the wood and the metal and wonders how to make the right decision. "What would you recommend."
The young guy picks up on of the rifles and expertly handles it, showing Jared how to load it. "Honestly picking a rifle is like picking a car. Everyone has different tastes and everyone has different standards and preferences but I think a bolt action rifle with a 22" barrel should do the trick."
He's somewhat in awe of the ease with which the guy handles the rifle. The reservation he had felt about asking someone younger than himself for advice is gone when seeing how familiar he is with guns and rifles. He watches some more how to maintain and clean the rifle and after getting the necessary ammunition for his newly purchased weapon, Jared leaves the store with less money on his account and but heavily armed and prepared to hunt down a wolf.
